Why successful web sites are
niche focused.

Maybe a small story
Will help with this whole idea of understanding the niche concept.

You see my parents live way in the country. They are retired. How I find it to be a blessing that they are still together. At seventy that’s the time you realize how important it is to have a partner. Few people understand that while they are still young. But wait until they get old...

But I will leave that behind; let me get back to...
         where was I?...mmm...niche aspect.

As I was saying, way in the country my parents had a convenient store, but that was not the only convenient store in the vicinity.

There were other
         many more others...

And there were also other bigger grocery stores but those were a few miles down the street. For a whole year after graduating from high school

For a full year!
I managing that convenient store.

I learned a lot from that experience.

You see this was a small rural community so I knew my customers, I started noticing that some of my customers would only come to buy certain products only once a month and only in the smallest quantity available and would always ask if we carried cartons of that product.

I found that behavior strange and so I decided to ask a few questions to those particular customers. What I discovered and the changes I made resulted to a gain in the stores revenue by few hundred dollars.

Understand Your Customers Needs.

Those customers only came to our store only when they ran out of their regular supply and the trip to their normal supplier (the grocery store) proved hard to make. They preferred to buy their products in cartons because they ended up saving a few dollars as compared to buying individual packages.

This offline principle of identifying your niche or a sub-niche within a niche is the same guiding principle when it comes to online business. Before you even start building your web pages, its important to define and understand what your web site is going to be about and to who/visitors its likely to attract.

Building a web site will involve writing content. A look at most of the successful web sites will reveal that they all have content that is theme based. In order to build a content rich site, there is a need to identify a niche, a topic area that you are either knowledgeable or at ease to write about.
