Domain name transfer. Preparation is key To a smooth process. |
Domain Name Transfer |
Make sure you know what you want to do.
That sounds simple and irrelevant but believe me, make sure that you know exactly what you want to do before you log in to your control panel and initiate a transfer or call your host help-line number and request a domain transfer.
For instance do:
Given the above two Scenario's,
The first one will take a domain name registered with a certain registrar and will then transfer or move the domain name to another registrar. It has nothing to do with your website, your email or your DNS.
The second request on the other hand deals with your DNS, (Domain Name Servers) and has a direct consequence to how your web site is displayed on the web.
Some of the requirenment you need to have ready before you initiate the process are:
- Your domain name should be unlocked.
- Your domain name should be a valid domain [not expired one].
- Some places will require that you have an authorization code from your registrar company.
- Your domain should be at least 60 days old with your current registrar before initiating a transfer.
Bare in mind that you will need to initiate the transfer.
The only company that can initiate a domain name transfer is the gaining registrar. This is simply the company that you want to transfer your domain name to.
The company is charged with the responsible of contacting the correct person (admin contact) and getting their explicit approval for the domain name transfer by ICANN.
Make sure that you have all the details of the other party e.g. Full Name, Address, and email account, phone number. Domain name transfers is not a one party's activity, the other party will be contacted for their consent and acceptance for this transaction.
As a procedure, several emails with specific instructions will be sent by both registrars to both the requestor and the old owner that need to be followed in a timely manner.
Be aware of the time frame needed to process the domain transfer. There are rules and regulations governing locked, pending delete, in redemption, inactive or active domains. For more information visit ICANN web site.
